International Women’s Day 2025 – Accelerate Action: Spotlight on Pearl Mary (Gambanyi) Gibbs

Today, we celebrate the incredible resilience, strength and achievements of women from diverse minority backgrounds.

Women who have broken barriers, overcome challenges, and paved the way for future generations.

Spotlight Story:

We honour Pearl Mary (Gambanyi) Gibbs (1901–1983), a proud Muruwari woman and one of Australia’s most influential Aboriginal activists. A tireless advocate for Indigenous rights, Pearl dedicated her life to fighting for justice, equality and inclusivity.

Breaking Barriers: Born in 1901 in New South Wales, Pearl experienced firsthand the injustices faced by Aboriginal people. Despite the barriers of her time, she became a powerful voice for Indigenous communities, advocating for land rights, fair wages and better living conditions.

Champion for Change: Pearl was a key figure in the Aboriginal Progressive Association, where she fought for Indigenous political representation. She played a crucial role in organising the Day of Mourning protest in 1938, a landmark moment in Australia’s civil rights history. She was also the first Aboriginal woman to be part of the NSW Aboriginal Welfare Board, where she continued to push for Indigenous voices to be heard in decision-making.

Her Legacy Lives On: Pearl’s activism laid the foundation for many Indigenous rights movements that followed. Her relentless pursuit of equality continues to inspire generations of First Nations women and communities striving for justice today.
